Thomas S. Lakin

Thomas S. Lakin, age 80, of Monroe, passed away Friday, March 3, 2023 in his home surrounded by his family. Tom was born May 28, 1942 in Wyandotte, he was the son of Stanley and Marian (Corrigan) Lakin. He married Maureen LaBeau November 6, 1965. He was a 1960 graduate of St. Patrick High School in Wyandotte and a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish. Tom served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He worked in the steel industry until his retirement in 1999. Tom served on the Board of Education for the Gibraltar School District for three years. He was an avid bird watcher with the Erie Shores Birding Association. He loved gardening. Much to the delight of his neighbors he would set up an elaborate Halloween display every year. Tom was always there to help anyone in need. When diagnosed with Alzheimer’s he entered every trial and research study that he could in the hope that he could further the effort to better understand and possibly cure the dibilating disease. Tom was selfless to the end. His last act on this earth was to donate his brain to the University of Michigan Brain Bank. He desired to help future generations battling the disease that robbed him of so much. Tom is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maureen; two daughters, Jennifer (Daniel) Quint of Plymouth, MI and Heather (Mark) Rickert of Ida; two granddaughters, Katlyn Gagnon and Madeline Quint and a brother, Ronald (Loraine) Lakin of Punta Gorda, FL. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother John Lakin. Visitation will be held Friday, March 10, 2023 at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Rev. Michael Anagbogu will officiate. Private burial will take place at a later time under the auspices of VFW Post 1138 Monroe. Memorial contributions are suggested to Michigan Brain Bank.
