Mary Anne Zanger

Mary Anne Zanger, 89 years, a lifelong resident of Monroe, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 5, 2025, in Monroe. Born March 11, 1936, in Monroe, Mary was the daughter of the late Jasper and Rose (Barretta) Marchese. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church and attended St. Joseph Grade School. She was a 1954 graduate of St. Mary Academy in Monroe. On September 3, 1960, Mary married the love of her life, Pietro “Pete” Zanger at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Sadly, he preceded her in death on April 20, 2024, after 63 years of marriage. In addition to being a wonderful homemaker, Mary worked as an Avon Lady, as a clerk at Kresge’s and as a secretary for Nolan and Son’s Construction in Monroe. Mary was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church where, when her children were young was very active in church activities, namely running the concession stand during Bingo. Most recently, when able, she attended St. Mary Catholic Church. Mary enjoyed playing Bingo, bus trips to the casino, traveling to Las Vegas, playing the lottery, going to the movies, shopping, cooking, baking, and tending to her flowers. Most of all she loved the time spent with family, especially her grandchildren and taking them to Pizza Hut. Mary is survived by four loving children: Jack Zanger of Monroe, Karen (Lou) Langermann of FL, Patty Zanger of Monroe, and Teresa (Rick) Mayne of Newport, eight cherished grandchildren: Stephanie (Corey), Jessica (Jason), Justin, Louis IV (Cam), Hillary (Craig), Kristen (Justin), Pete (Jenn), and Jeffrey (Karen), 16 treasured great grandchildren, and her sister Theresa (Roger) Thornton. In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Marchese and a sister, Grace Cole. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025, from 4 – 8 pm at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. Monroe, Michigan, 48161, where a Rosary service will begin at 6:00 pm. On Friday, May 9, 2025, she will lie in state at St. Mary Catholic Church, 127 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan, 48161, beginning at 10:00 am, with Mass of the Resurrection celebrating Mary’s life at 11:00 am. Fr. David Burgard, pastor of the church, will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
