Kay I. Thoma, age 86 of Monroe, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2025 at Wellspring Lutheran Home. Born December 11, 1938 at Mercy Hospital in Monroe, Kay was the daughter of the late Salvatore “Sam” born in Chicago Illinois Jan. 29, 1911 and Jeanne (Wagar) Sineni, born in Flat Rock, MI. Jan. 5, 1918. Kay was baptized as Roman Catholic on Sept. 10, 1939. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1956 and attended Eastern Michigan University. Kay was employed by Monroe Evening News for seven years where she met her future husband, Douglas W. Thoma. The two were wed on January 20, 1962 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Together they raised two children. Sadly, he preceded Kay in death on August 30, 2022 after 60 wonderful years of marriage. After working for the local newspaper, Kay was then employed as a clerk for twenty years by Monroe First District Court and retired in January 1997. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Kay enjoyed bowling and dancing in her younger years, was an avid reader, and embraced being a homemaker for her family. Kay was confirmed to have MS on August 28,1987. She enjoyed vacationing, playing cards and taking cruises. Kay is survived by a daughter, Tani Thoma of Monroe; son, Todd (Christina) Thoma of Clarkston, MI; two sisters, Nancy Aiken of Canton, MI and Norene (Ben) Mason of Monroe; and a grandson, Joshua Thoma. In addition to her husband and parents, Kay is preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Richard Aiken and Gary Thoma. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Apr. 25th at Bacarella Funeral Home with a Scripture Service at 6 p.m. Kay will lie in state at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John Catholic Church where Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Rev. Fr. David Burgard will officiate followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.
