John H. “Jack” Lauer, 97 years, a lifelong resident of Monroe, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 in his home with his daughters at his side. Born November 25, 1926 in Monroe, above Hoffman Clothing Store, at 44 West Front Street, Jack was the son of the late Harry E. and Gertrude (Bicking) Lauer. He attended Monroe Public School’s and was a 1944 graduate of Monroe High School. Jack served his country honorably and proudly as a Sergeant in the United States Army, serving from June 25, 1945 until December 2, 1946. On September 13, 1948, Jack married his beloved wife, the former Eulalia Manor. Sadly, she preceded him in death on July 23, 2013, after 64 years of marriage. In 1887 Joseph Hoffman opened a haberdashery in downtown Monroe. In 1906 the business moved to 44 West Front Street. The business was purchased in 1919 by Joseph Hoffman’s nephews: Harry Lauer, Frank Sturn, and Walter Hoffman. It was at the young age of 14, that Jack began to work at Hoffman Clothing. In the mid 1950’s Jack became a partner, along with his father and William Woelmer. Jack would continue to operate Hoffman’s Clothing for 47 years. On October 1, 1987 on the 100th anniversary of the store, Jack retired. Jack was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Monroe. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, both large and small game, and woodcarving. Most of all Jack enjoyed time spent with family. Jack is survived by two loving daughters: Joanna Paton of Belleville and Kathleen A. (Phillip Teal) Lauer of Monroe. In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Jack was preceded in death by two sisters: Gertrude Sisung and Helen Hudson. In keeping with Jacks wishes, cremation has been held and he will be interred next to his wife at St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe. Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd.
